Even the most comprehensive program will not be effective without good instructors,
and KTR has invested significant effort in selecting the highest quality instructors.
The
instructors have been selected for their knowledge of the material and their ability
to present the material in an understandable and logical manner.
BATTALION CHIEF LATHEY WIRKUS
is a 23 veteran of the Elizabeth Fire Department. He is currently assigned to the Division
of Training where he is responsible for training two hundred and sixty nine sworn firefighters.
He ranked number one the Department of Personnel Battalion Chief exam. Battalion Chief Wirkus
is a Level 2 instructor for the State of NJ. He has lectured at the National Fire Academy and
"Fire House" Convention in Baltimore, MD. He also holds several training certificates including
Incident Safety Officer, Confined Space Rescue, Live Burn and SCBA instructor. He has previously
served as Captain of two of the busiest companies in the City of Elizabeth - Engine Co. 1 and
Rescue Co. 1. Additionally, he served as the Operations officer for the Elizabeth Fire Department
at the World Trade Center on September 11 and in the days that followed. He has received numerous
commendations during his career to including the Union County 200 Club Valor Award.
BATTALION CHIEF DANIEL E. CAMPBELL
brings to Key Testing and Review a full range of firefighting,
line officer and chief officer experience. Chief Campbell is a 21 year veteran of the Elizabeth
Fire Department, the fourth largest city in the State of New Jersey. He began his career in Fire
Rescue and then spent the next seven years assigned to a Ladder Company. Upon his promotion to
Captain, he was assigned to the busiest engine company in Union County. Battalion Chief Campbell's
next assignment was in Fire Headquarters, commanding the Division of Communications. Working
alongside the Chief of Department, he gained valuable experience in budgeting, problem solving,
daily operations, and personnel issues. Battalion Chief Campbell is currently assigned to a tour
managing and supervising 62 men as a Battalion Chief. He is currently enrolled in Middlesex
County College pursuing a degree in Fire Science and holds a 4.0 grade point average with few
credits remaining to attain his degree. Battalion Chief Campbell is also a published author having
written an article on the topic of transformer fires that was published in "Firehouse" magazine.
He has received nine citations from the City of Elizabeth. He has also received citations from the
St. Barnabas Burn Center and the State FMBA.
CAPTAIN JAMES J. ADAMS
is a 15 year veteran with the Union Township Fire Department and is currently assigned as the
headquarters' House Tour 1 Commander. He is a level II State of New Jersey Fire Instructor and
headed the Training Division for the Union Fire Department from 1994-1997. He attained a Bachelor
of Arts degree from Kean University and holds a teaching certificate. He has ranked in the top 3
in each of the past promotional exams and ranked #1 on the most recent Battalion Chief's exam.
