STATEMENT ON POLICE SERGEANT LAWSUIT
AND 2010 EXAMINATION PROCESS
March 2010
The United States Department of Justice filed a suit in
federal court alleging that the New Jersey Civil Service
examination used to test for promotion to Police Sergeant was
discriminatory. However, contrary to recent communications
circulated among law enforcement personnel, at this point in
time, no decisions have been made with respect to
changes in test format or test content. A ranking
manager at the Civil Service Commission has told me the testing
for 2010, for all ranks is on schedule and will be announced and
tested on schedule.
In particular, the Civil Service Commission is aware of at
least one study group that has made a claim that the 2010 Police
Sergeant exam will be similar to a product being offered for
sale. This claim is purely speculative and does not stem from
any decisions made by or information provided by the New Jersey
Civil Service Commission.
The New Jersey Civil Service Commission (NJ CSC) plans to
issue an announcement for Police Sergeant in July of 2010 and
anticipates testing in the fall. When decisions are made with
respect to test content or format, information regarding these
changes will be published on this web site and the Commission’s
website and will also be provided to PBA and FOP leaders.
Accurate information is what you need to make an informed
decision regarding which study group to attend. The decision to
attend test preparation classes and study group sessions are
purely personal, and Key Testing & Review wants you to make
those decisions based on facts and not on speculation.
Additional information on 2010 course dates, locations,
and materials will
be available based on updates from NJ CSC.
