Each class will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be repeated from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Some classes for lieutenant and captain candidates are offered only once, so check the attached schedule for details.

Police officers do not ordinarily receive supervisory/management training and evaluation before becoming eligible for promotion. For this reason, and because management and supervisory knowledge and ability are critical to the success of a Police Sergeant, Lieutenant or Captain, test developers tend to focus on management/supervisory principles when developing promotional tests. Each of the last six promotional examinations given to law enforcement has concentrated 60-65% of the exam in this area. To do well on your exam, therefore, you must become knowledgeable in this area. Our instructors present an in-depth analysis of the management principles you need to know and understand in order to correctly answer the management and supervision questions posed to you on your promotional exam. Using the management texts on the Department of Personnel reading lists as an anchor point; the instructors bring their vast body of knowledge and experience in law enforcement operations, administration, and testing to bear on this most critical subject area. More specifically, the instructors reinforce the major principles of management, supervision and leadership, which are typically measured in promotion tests on such topics as: Leadership, Planning, Delegation, Motivation, Performance Evaluation, Communication, and Human Relations. They also provide take-home material, and administer several practice tests both to measure your progress and to give you experience with the various types of test questions used in New Jersey promotion exams.
