| PROGRAM NOTES |

Law enforcement officers must know and be able to apply NJs laws and related Attorney General Guidelines, and so these areas have been consistently targeted by the Department of Personnel as sources from which promotion exam questions could be drawn. The law and related Guidelines, however, create a particularly difficult situation for individuals studying for promotional exams because there is an overwhelming amount of information to be learned, only a very small portion of which can possibly be tested on your exam. To further complicate the matter, test developers frequently incorporate knowledge of the law and Guidelines into situational questions that not only measure your understanding of legal/technical issues, but also your ability to implement them appropriately as a supervisor or manager. To help you deal with these problems, our instructors demonstrate a systematic approach to studying the law and related Guidelines and, equally important, how an effective supervisor incorporates an understanding of this technical material into the supervision of staff under his/her control. Particular emphasis is placed on recent changes that affect the responsibilities of law enforcement officers and supervisors. Using test question formats that you are likely to see on your exam, they show how the New Jersey Criminal Code, New Jersey Motor Vehicle Law, constitutional issues, and related case law and administrative directives are applied to specific situations, and how they control a law enforcement officers activities.
